In Or Out

From the fruit of their lips people are filled with good things,
    and the work of their hands brings them reward.

Proverbs 12:14

Some good news, today, if you’re a person of action. According to Proverbs, your fruitful speech and hard work are going to pay off! This book of wisdom is filled with little life lessons like this, and this is a big one: You are what you do. The more you invest outward in the world around you, the more you will reap the blessings of an active life of faith!

Not too shabby, if you’re the outwardly focused type. And that’s not all…some more good news!

Be still, and know that I am God;

Psalm 46:10

If you tend to focus more inwardly, God’s got that covered too. In Psalm 46, God advises us to be still. To calm oneself. To adopt a more contemplative mindset. To simply relax and be, in the presence of God.

How cool is that? Life has multiple pathways that can lead us to be close to God. We are built with the capacity to find God both inside and out. It just depends on our focus. What’s yours?

But what about those days when nothing inside or out seems to bring you peace?

Here’s the most good news of all…

John Wesley, on his death bed, said “Best of all, God is with us.” Yes, that’s the best news there is! No qualifiers. No “if’s” or “maybes”. Even when we’re stuck in the revolving door of life, unable to find peace inside or out, God has not abandoned us. God never stops loving us, journeying with us, guiding us and protecting us.

Essentially, we can’t go anywhere where God is not already there, welcoming us with open arms. Even when it’s tough, inside and out,

So, why not try something? Get out there and cross a few things off your to-do list. Or take a deep breath and cross a few names off your prayer-list. In or Out? Where will you find God today? Perhaps a little of both isn’t a bad idea.

Whichever path you choose, take heart that you’re on the threshold…

of something very,

very good.
