I plead the 5th

It’s been quite a week.  Everyone’s talking, but as for me…

I plead the 5th.

The 5th commandment, I mean.

“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. –Exodus 20:12

Honor your father and your mother.  Make them proud.

Live a life worthy of the love they have passed down to you.

Not just your birth parents.  Also, your teachers.  And your preachers.

Your elders.

And your whole family, really.

“Give weight to the family” is another way to define this commandment.

Brothers, sisters.  Aunts, uncles.  Yes, be sure to give weight to these special people.

When you do that, you honor God, and you affirm your covenant with God!

And while you’re at it, why not honor some other people, too?

I mean, since you’re in the mood…

Church members.  Doctors.  Veterans. Sanitation workers.

How about strangers on the street?  Different colors, backgrounds, lifestyles…

Why not honor them too?

In fact, would it be taking this commandment too far if we were to honor everyone to the very best of our ability?

Maybe.

The commandment doesn’t get that broad, I suppose.

But it still seems the honorable thing to do.

So here’s my advice:

Go forth, and LOUDLY plead the 5th.

Incriminate yourself as a child of God.

Have a great week,

Mitch
