Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever.
Psalm 125:1
if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move.
Matthew 17:20
If you had superpowers, which of the following would you choose?
A. To be so powerful that you were invulnerable and immortal? Or
B. To be so powerful that you could perform impossible feats with the power of your voice?
That’s a tough choice! Our two scriptures today offer us both possibilities, all through the power of trust and faith in God. In the Psalm, we become as immovable as a mountain. In Matthew, we can actually move one.
Well, why not do both? There’s no exclusionary clause here, no need to pick one or another. With faith, it would appear, nothing is impossible. In fact, the impossible becomes probable. With faith, we can become mountain-moving mountains. What a thought!
This faith sounds like a magic elixir, some hidden, exotic transformation that grants us god-like powers. Except it’s a spiritual strength that comes from God and is as available and tiny as a mustard seed. This is not some superhero origin story, it is the story of a simple belief that God is, was, and will be with us, and how that changes everything.
Faith like this seems unattainable until I look at what I’ve seen faith do in my life. Faith has held me fast through raging storms and harrowing journeys I have taken. Faith has given me strength to accomplish things I only dreamed were possible, to make a difference in the world, to remove obstacles and focus on the Kingdom.
The scriptures aren’t lying here, fellow hero of the faith. You are a mountain-moving mountain, and so am I. God is calling us to get out there and rearrange…
the spiritual landscape.
Have a great week,
Mitch
