You’re Not Listening

[Jesus ends a parable saying]‘If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’
-Luke 16:31

I tend to remember people’s emotions, but not their names.

But talking? I have that skill in spades. If you want to talk about deep stuff like the state of the nation, religious integrity, or radical equality, well, look out. I’m your guy.

I probably talk three times more than I listen. Which is ironic, considering all the times I’ve said the words, “You’re not listening.”

Almost always, when I think or say those words, it’s because I am desperately trying to convince somebody that I’m right. I’ve talked until I’m blue in the face to people who then get red in the face, and neither of us seem to be doing much listening.

Sometimes I feel a bit how Abraham felt in this parable from Jesus. A rich man finds himself in Hades after a selfish life. He pleads with Abraham for some relief, or at least a warning sent to his still-living brothers.

Abraham basically rolls his eyes. If they haven’t listened to all the Law and Prophets down through the ages, they ain’t gonna start now. Some people just don’t listen.

But Jesus tries anyway. And in Matthew, he lays out this ancient truth the rich man couldn’t hear:

“In everything do to others as you would have them do to you,
for this is the Law and the Prophets.”

—Matthew 7:12

It’s the Golden Rule! Surely misguided folk like him will listen to Jesus! And let’s be clear, there are plenty of other misguided folk out there.

But now I’m wondering about that story…

What if I’m not just the one saying, “You’re not listening”? What if Jesus is saying that to me?

No, that can’t be it. I’m generally a kind, open, compassionate guy. Except when I’m not. Which happens, sometimes.

Especially when I’m angrily debating the state of the nation, or religious integrity, or radical equality.

I still think I’m right about these divisive issues. But most people deserve to be listened to, whether their face is blue or red (see what I did there?).

Maybe I haven’t done enough of that.

And there it is again. The Golden Rule.
Have I been doing unto others?
I need to think and pray about that.

Yeah, I’m a solid 6.5 out of 10.
Which really isn’t that solid.
I still have more to learn.

Okay God…

I’m listening.

Have a great week,
Mitch
