Civilization’s End

“Alas, alas, the great city,
    Babylon, the mighty city!
For in one hour your judgment has come.”
–Revelation 18:10

Is this it? Is the world about to consume itself?

Probably not.

Our current president is part of an exclusive club. People who have threatened to destroy a whole civilization and had the power to do so.

This quote from Revelation sounds like today’s headlines. A threat of annihilation. It’s been said before, but that doesn’t make it any less frightening.

The context for this scripture is important. When John talks about Babylon’s fall, he’s talking about empires–probably referring to the Roman Empire.

I take this chapter out of Revelation as an important warning–absolute power corrupts absolutely. I read the headlines, and I’m concerned.

I’m already in the weeds here, talking about socio-political stuff I’m no expert in. But as a pastor, I know a thing or two about humans consumed with their own power.

It doesn’t end well, for anybody. Just before this passage, John refers to immoral leaders who have brought down the once mighty nation.

Whose job is it to call out immoral leaders? Politicians? Army Generals? Christians?

I know so many have tried to do just that, just to lose everything in the crossfire.

I don’t want to lose my country either. I admit I’ve had some of those fears about our nation.

Am I worried about the end of the world? No. Humans have lived through countless deadlines, and somehow, the world keeps ticking. But I am worried things might get a lot worse before they get better.

I’m praying for cooler heads to prevail.

I’m just not sure if any of those are in charge.

Have a great week,

Mitch
