Out of the mouths of babes and infants
you have founded a bulwark…
–Psalm 8:2a
Kid, you’re quite the distraction.
And for that I say thank you.
You don’t know it, but you’re my favorite part of Sunday morning.
I’ve been sitting in the back row. My services are at 8 and 10:15, so I’m able to join my mom for most of the 9am traditional service. (She comes to my 10:15 service too–she’s a church junkie!)
You sit right in front of me. Well, sometimes you sit. Other times you squirm, or flop, or grab on to one of your parents.
And the best? When you look over their shoulder and smile at me.
Your little fingers and toes? The most beautiful thing in the room.
Your voice? As melodious as the choir.
Your smile? A sermon in itself.
The fancy word we use is Imago Dei. It means “image of God.” You and I? We were both created in God’s image. We’re meant to reflect God’s character, God’s love.
You’re pretty darned good at that.
Most of us forget, from time to time, that being a reflection of our Creator is the calling for our lives. You live that without even trying.
I hope that the joy I see in you carries on throughout your life.
No, baby, you’re not really a distraction. You make me want to praise God.
Make as much noise as you can muster, baby.
Every bit of it is joyful.
Have a great week,
Mitch
