This Little Light

You are the light of the world.

Matthew 5:14

I am the light of the world

John 9:5

In the darkness of the middle of the night, the song just popped into my head.

“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.” What a strange song to come to me at 3am. I found it immensely comforting to recall those familiar words. I had forgotten, for a moment. I had forgotten that I carry with me all the light I need.

It is light that helps me to see clearly the world around me. It illuminates the presence of God in every moment. It is a light that opens up possibilities and pushes back shadows. It is, at times, just a very little light, especially when I don’t tend to it, but God makes sure the ember always remains. It is the light of my soul, put there by my creator.

It is light that warms me when the day’s events leave me cold. When all the joy seems sucked out of the universe, the light still burns. It is, at times, a very faint warmth, especially when I don’t fuel it with my faith, but it is the presence of a spark that can ignite great things. It is the light of my soul, put there by my creator.

It is light that is a reflection of a greater light. So much so that Jesus, who claimed himself to be the Light of the world said that the same light was in us, not to be hidden. It is a light that urges us to spread and share it. This little light of mine is really God’s light, in my soul, placed there lovingly at the center of all that I am.

Here I have been walking around in the dark lately, bumping into things, chilled by my frustrations, feeling disconnected, when all along, this little light of mine was flickering for attention. And so today, I am nurturing what I have been given. I am seeing the world differently. I am accepting the comfort and the challenge.

And I am pledging anew, to

let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Have a good week,

Mitch
