Power and Light

And God said “Let there be light”

Genesis 1:3

What has come into being in him was life, and this life is the light of all people

John 1:3-4

It took God four words. I can’t do that, but I can do it in five:

“Alexa, turn on the light”.

And there was light! Thanks to technology, I control power and light!

Sort of. I require some assistance. To perform this voice-activated feat, I need Alexa’s help. Which means in some strange way I need Jeff Bezos’s help, since my smart devices came from Amazon. And let’s not forget the delivery driver, or the folks who built it, or Thomas Edison, for that matter. I guess it takes a village to raise a lamp.

But God started out with nothing. Just said the Word and it was so. Not the culmination of thousands of years of innovation, but the Source of it. The original Power and Light.

The Gospel of John uses lots of words to describe God’s creative work through Christ, and power and light both make the list. Which is good, because we need more than a 60-Watt soft light bulb to show us the way.

And here’s what’s amazing. We need God’s power and light to power US.

Perhaps that’s why Jesus says, “I am the light of the world” and, “YOU are the light of the world.” Christ shines for us and helps us to reflect Christ into the world.

Jeff Bezos has nothing on God when it comes to lighting up my life.

I may call on Alexa from time to time, but that light pales in comparison to what happens when I call on God.

It only takes three words:

“Light me up!”

Have a great week,

Mitch
