Children Of The Wind

The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

Nicodemus 3:8

I didn’t sleep well last night.

The wind has been blowing for the past couple days, and the house has been creaking. I’d toss and turn, and start to drift, and then “woosh”, the windows would rattle and the roof would tremble, and so would I.

Funny thing, the wind. When it blows outside, I feel it inside. Unsettled, uncertain. Like an unwelcome reminder that life is restless.

I turn from one side to the other, and reflect on the uneven world. The present seems precarious. The future seems fraught with the unknown.

In his conversation with Nicodemus, Jesus likened the wind to the Holy Spirit. You can’t see it, but you know it’s there. I’ve always liked that comparison, but as I listen to the house shake, I wonder: Is the Spirit supposed to be so disruptive? So turbulent?

If so, maybe I’m not supposed to be sleeping so soundly tonight, after all.

Maybe God blows into our lives and keeps blowing,

And you and I must learn to lean in, to walk where it leads us.

We are Children of the Spirit.

We are Children of the Wind.

Have a great week,

Mitch
